Scholarships

FCD Health is dedicated to training and supporting the next generation of healthcare professionals in the Northern Territory. Through our scholarship programs, we provide opportunities for growth, learning, and excellence in training and education.

Training the Territory’s Next Generation of Health Care Professionals

Our organisation is committed to working to increase the Territory’s healh care workforce.

Partnering with the Northern Territory Medical Program as well as accepting General Practice Registrars from the Northern Territory General Practice Education program and overseas medical graduates eligible for the Royal Australian College of General Practice’s alternate pathway programs, we have trained 90 General Practice Registrars and over 200 Student Doctors, Nurses, Paramedics and Allied Health Practitioners since 2011.  With a significant number remaining in the NT and coming back to work with us during their careers. Three of our own Specialist General Practitioners commenced their primary health care journey as Registrars in our teaching program.

A core component of our commitment to growing the health workforce is reinvesting funds generated through our service delivery activities into our teaching and training programs.  We invest in providing a teaching and training team of excellence and provide a scholarship program each semester.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Each of our scholarships are designed to support students in their medical journey, whether by acknowledging exceptional growth, academic excellence, or a deep connection to their patients and community. These awards reflect our ongoing commitment to strengthening the Northern Territory’s healthcare workforce and ensuring high-quality care for future generations.

Leaps and Bounds Scholarship
Established in 2020, the Leaps and Bounds Scholarship is awarded to the student who has demonstrated the most significant personal growth and transformation in their approach to learning and the application of that learning in the clinical setting.

The recipient of this Scholarship will have been deemed by the FCD Health Executive and Clinical Supervision team to demonstrate to a high degree:
A greater understanding of the methodology of applying medical knowledge in the clinical setting;
A willingness to listen to feedback and incorporate that feedback into their learning plan;

The Leaps and Bounds Scholarship is intended to assist the recipient to pursue opportunities to support their ongoing personal development.
Osler Scholarship
The Osler Scholarship was established in 2020 by the FCD Health Executive team and is named for Sir William Osler, a Canadian physician who cofounded the Johns Hopkins Hospital and pioneered bringing medical students to the bedside for clinical training.

Recognising exceptional commitment to learning, the Osler Scholarship is awarded to the student who demonstrates a depth and breadth of medical knowledge and a clarity of understanding not only of the fundamental tenets of medicine but also their practical application.

The recipient of this Scholarship will have been deemed by the FCD Health Executive team to demonstrate to a high degree:
A high level of medical knowledge;
The ability to apply that knowledge in the clinical setting;
An aptitude for the interpretation of patient symptoms to arrive at an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan;

The Scholarship is intended to assist the recipient to pursue opportunities that expand their knowledge and learnings in medicine.
Ronald Chou Jedi Knight Scholarship
Ronald Chou was a medical student in the Northern Territory Medical Program, placed at FCD Health in 2015, tragically taken way too young in an accident whilst visiting his family in Taiwan in December 2015.

Ronald’s passing profoundly affected all who had known him, and a decision was made by FCD Health, with the permission of Ronald’s family, to establish a scholarship in his name.

A fervent Star Wars fan, it was decided the Scholarship should also pay homage to Ronald’s Star Wars passion. The Ronald Chou Jedi Knight Scholarship was established in 2016, to be awarded to one student each semester by the FCD Health Executive Team.

To be awarded to the student who most ably demonstrates the same core values and approach to medicine exhibited by Ronald, described FCD Health’s then clinical mentor Dr Sam Heard as ‘demonstrating a rare connection with and understanding of his patients’, the criteria for this Scholarship is complex in its simplicity.

The recipient of this Scholarship will have been deemed by the FCD Health Executive team to demonstrate to a high degree:
Empathy, to patients and colleagues;
A zest and passion for medicine with a connection to patients that moves beyond ‘a diagnosis’ focused interaction;
A sense of community that extends beyond what is ‘required’; and
A commitment to engaging with patients on their journey.

The Scholarship is intended to assist the recipient to pursue opportunities that will further enhance their commitment to medicine as a vocation.
